Using Hydroponics Indoors and Outdoors
Hydroponics can be used in a variety of places and a number of ways.
Growing vegetables, herbs, fruit, flowers or even for science projects.
The main ideas concern including the major parts of a hydroponic system no matter where you grow.
Indoors
When growing plants indoors it is considerably easier to control the many factors influencing growth.
With light, temperature and humidity under control one may focus on the plants with more ease.
Also with indoor growing a year round production cycle can be used and one can have fresh tomatoes,
cucumbers or marigolds anytime.
**Project**
1. Take a two liter pop bottle and cut in where the neck tapers into the widest part of the bottle.
2. Invert the top so that it makes a funnel and rests on inside the bottom half of the bottle.
3. Punch a hole in the cap and lace a piece of cotton cord through the hole so that it reaches from
the bottom into the top compartment.
4. Fill the bottom part of the bottle with nutrient soloution (if you cannot get a hydro grow mix, Miracle Grow* and water will work)
5. Fill the upper half of the bottle with your choice of growing media, plant your choice of plant in the media.
Now put the set-up in a sunny window and keep an eye on the nutrient soloution as it will get drawn
up the cord into the media for the plant to use. Refill it as necessary and enjoy watching yor plant grow!!
Outdoors
When growing outdoors one must deal with the weather as it comes. Temperature, light and humidity all can change
but can be worked with to grow sucessfully. Again any hydroponic system will work as long as the basic components
are present. Plant choices are important and should be thought out carefully as cerrtain plants will do better than others
in any situation. Growing hydropponically outdoors proves to be a challenge with the many other factors influencing plant
growth out of your hands. Though having a set-up in the back yard can prove to be both unique in form and rewarding in production.
